Ride the Wave: Integrate Bitcoin Payments with Wavelength on Mainnet π
Today we're announcing that Wavelength, our toolkit for integrating payments into any app, is now live on mainnet for everyone. That means humans and agents can now pay and get paid in bitcoin (with stablecoins coming soon) with minimal upfront setup. With Wavelength, an agent can hold a balance and pay for an API call, a data feed, or another agent's service in fractions of a cent on Lightning, with no card, no account, and no human approving each transaction. The same few API calls give any agents, developers, or vibe coders payments in their app, with no node to run, no channels to manage, and no liquidity to source.
Highlights of this release:
- Now on mainnet: Install the client, create a wallet, and start sending and receiving bitcoin on mainnet right away.
- More secure, more reliable: Restore wallets from a seed phrase, retried requests won't pay twice, and exits recover from interruptions.
- Safer permissions for apps and agents: Give a service only the right to receive payments, with no access to signing or recovery.
Agents, Meet Mainnet π€
Mainnet access means an agent can now pay a few sats for each premium data query. An agent can buy API access the moment it needs it instead of waiting on someone to sign up and provision a key. A group of agents can settle up with each other for services as they go. All of it happens in fractions of a cent, around the clock, with no human approving each payment.
Wavelength gives agents this out of the box. With wavecli mcp serve, an agent drives the wallet as typed tool calls through MCP (Model Context Protocol, a standardized way for AI assistants to call external tools). With L402, an open protocol that lets any API charge sats per request and natively authenticate with Lightning, an agent can pay for a service the moment it calls it, with no signup and no API key. The same toolkit works on the other side too, so you can charge agents per request for whatever your own service offers. Your agent can even set itself up: point it at the agent onboarding page and it can read the docs, install the client, and wire up a wallet on its own.
Agents get spending power without getting your secrets. Wallet creation and unlock stay on the command line, so seeds and passwords don't pass over the agent channel. And if an agent only needs to get paid, you can give it a receive-only credential that can't sign, recover, or administer the wallet (more on that below).
Built for Real Payments π
Getting started on mainnet works the same way it does on the test networks: install the client, create a wallet, and go. Users get a wallet they control from the first command. They hold the keys, and the exit command lets them move their balance back to the bitcoin blockchain at any time without anyone's permission. The coordination service that settles transfers on Wavelength's Ark-like settlement layer never has unilateral control of their funds.
Opening mainnet to everyone meant making sure the wallet holds up with real money in real-world conditions. Since the pre-alpha release, we've focused on making it something you and your users can rely on:
- Recovery you can count on: If a user loses a device, restoring from the seed phrase (the words that back up a wallet's keys) brings back all of their funds and picks up any work that was still in progress.
- Free exit upkeep: Users keep their ability to exit on their own without paying to maintain it. The wallet automatically refreshes their funds during a free window before they expire, so staying exit-ready costs nothing.
- Least-privilege access: You can give an app or agent exactly the access it needs and nothing more.
wavecli bakemacaroonissues a macaroon (a credential that carries only the permissions you grant it), so a service can receive payments with no ability to sign, recover, or administer the wallet. - Transparent fees: Fee previews show an estimate of what a payment will cost, and activity history is easier to read.
- Fewer moving parts: Release binaries now include the wallet RPC (the interface your app calls) and the swap runtime out of the box, so there's less to install and configure.
For this release, each mainnet account can hold up to 300,000 sats, and each individual VTXO can hold up to 50,000 sats. There are several different types of fees when using Wavelength, but users will always see an estimated fee upfront, including our best estimate of network fees. For the time being, Lightning payments have a 0.25% service fee for both sending and receiving, plus normal Lightning routing fees. Moving funds between on-chain and Wavelength carries a small service fee, which is dynamic and typically minimal at today's fee rates. When users deposit, they also pay the normal network fee for their deposit transaction. When users withdraw to a bitcoin address, all fees are bundled together including the on-chain fee. If a user exits on their own, they only pay bitcoin network fees.
Wavelength is built so users can always take their bitcoin back to the main bitcoin blockchain on their own, without needing permission. To keep that guarantee, funds need a quick renewal roughly every two weeks. The wallet handles this automatically and for free, as long as it's opened at some point in the refresh window of each two-week cycle. Wallets that run in the background, like those in apps and agents, will typically never notice. If a wallet stays offline past that point, the funds aren't lost. The next time the client comes online, it works with the server to recover the funds.
Start Building π π€
To integrate Wavelength, start with the Wavelength developer docs, including the llms.txt and llms-full.txt files your agent can ingest in one shot, or run npx skills add lightninglabs/wavelength-sdk to drop Wavelength skills into Claude Code, Cursor, Codex, and other coding agents. To try Wavelength before writing any code, open the live demo for a signet wallet in your browser, and check out the Builder's Guide.
We'd like to thank the community of testers who worked with us over the past few months to provide feedback, catch bugs, and make feature requests! This is still an alpha, so tell us what works, what doesn't, and what's missing. Your feedback continues to shape where Wavelength goes next.
Whether you're adding payments to a project, offering bitcoin to your app's users, or an agent with sats to spend, Wavelength is now open to you on mainnet. Ride the wave and build the future of money! π
